Renewable Energy Technology: Evolution and Policy Implications— Evidence from Patent Literature

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and CambridgeIP have published a report, including evidence of striking increases in commercial innovation, evidenced by patent filings, in key Climate Change Mitigation Technology (CCMT) areas: Biofuels, Solar Thermal, Solar PV and Wind Energy. This Global Challenges Report analyzes the patent landscapes of these four Climate Change Mitigation Technologies (CCMTs) to inform policy discussions by providing empirical evidence of innovation trends and technology ownership. One finding is that in the report’s focus areas of biofuels, solar thermal, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy there were more patents filed in 5 years to 2011 than in the previous 30 years. The WIPO Global Challenges study reviews the patent landscapes of these four key Climate Change Mitigation Technologies (CCMTs) to inform policy discussions by providing evidence of innovation trends, technology ownership and other facts from the global patent literature.
