Case study 2

Client profile

A major medical devices corporation seeking independent thinking to identify innovations for acquisition approached CambridgeIP for assistance

Business situation

Our client was a well funded and acquisitive division of a major corporation. The client had identified ‘smart grids’ as an application area in which they wished to own Intellectual Property to augment their existing IP assets and activities in adjacent spaces. The client was willing to acquire IP through the purchase of patents, by striking exlusive liicence deals or by purchasing controling stakes in other companies.

CambridgeIP's approach

  • Our internal patent search team, with client approved external experts, identified 10 broad technology areas with the potential to meet the needs as expressed.
  • We randomly sampled each of the 10 technology areas to recover a representative dataset of patents and patent applications from each.
  • Results were analysed and our client selected several promising technology areas for rigorous patent searching and deeper analysis.
  • We developed a detailed IP Landscape for each of the focus areas, providing the client with information on activity and trends within them, together with a list of potential acquisition targets.

Results and benefits

  • Definition of 10 technology areas of interest to the client
  • Ranking of the technology areas, to identify focus areas for more detailed investigation
  • Understanding activity and relationships in the space to inform selection of targets
  • Of particular interest to our client was information on the patent activity of academic inventors for purchase of patents and of start-up companies for acquisition
